Or perhaps you’re from the south and prefer your pickles ‘Sweet and Spicy.’ Could this say something about you?

Well, please fill out the form below and let’s put this theory to the test! (results will be posted/updated on our facebook page.)

Every year, no matter what, there’s always one thing I can count on…someone will give me a pickle-oriented Christmas gift. : )

So if there’s truly a Pickle-Santa Clause, I must have been a very good girl indeed. Here’s a rundown of the very thoughtful gifts I received:

And do you know what that odd-shaped copper thing is? Why yes, that’s a cookie cutter in the shape of a pickle. It’s gift I purchased for myself but haven’t used yet. (Looking forward to making pickle-shaped sugar cookies.)

My talented and crafty niece Sophi also made me what I suspect is the smallest pickle figurine in the whole wide world. This photo shows the pickle next to a grain of rice. Cool right?

So that’s it. Hope everyone enjoyed their holidays. Time to get ready for an incredible 2012!

It was a beautiful evening for our outdoor Japanese pickle party.

A lot of people brought amazing homemade Japanese pickles. Japanese pickles are made with so many different vegetables, including some basic ones such as cucumbers with shiso (perilla leaves), radishes and cabbage to name only a few.

But there were also Japanese pickles made with non-traditional vegetables such as cauliflower, baby French breakfast radishes, watermelon radishes and chiogga beets. What makes them considered Japanese? The brine. All the vegetables were made with some kind of combination of Rice Vinegar, Mirin, Sake, Soysauce, Sesame Oil and Ginger.

It was a yummy event with an abundance of pickles (including watermelon rind pickles) and sake. Unfortunately, here at The Pickle Club we were much too busy eating instead of taking photos so many of the attendees are not in the video but hope you enjoy just the same!

Plastics have really taken over as the containers of choice, but their safety is often in question these days. Glass, of course, was and still is used, but at one time pottery crocks were used to hold foods for storage.

Not only were they used to store foods but also for fermentation processes and pickling. Made from rich clay deposits here in Ohio the pottery was made into practical items that helped families survive winters by storing and keeping their foods. They came in all sizes and shapes, some twenty or thirty gallons to little pint-sized jugs that used corks to keep in the flavor of its contents.

The organizer Nancy Ralph wasn’t sure the lower east side streets would be open but there was also rain and 40 mile per hour wind. Ultimately, tons of people came and she couldn’t get people to leave! It became a place for people to connect again. That’s the spirit of New Yorkers. : )
